ARE SMBs finally beginning to pick up IP telephony at the same rate as their corporate counterparts? Well, IDC’s latest figures show small businesses make up a growing chunk of the pie in western Europe, buying 18% of all IP lines shipped during the third quarter. Firms with 0 to 49 employees are showing an ‘increased interest’ in the next-generation technology, the research house noted.
IDC says total Q3 western European IP telephony shipments powered up 16% sequentially, with market leader Cisco among the biggest gainers. As the recipients of 58% of lines shipped, medium-sized firms (50 to 249 employees) are still by far the largest group, with large corporates with more than 250 employees making up 24% of the market.
The total western European IP PBX sector was worth $394m (?300m) in the three months to September, according to the number-cruncher, with government and communications among the most vibrant vertical markets. "Overall 3Q06 was a quarter of steady growth for the European IP PBX and IP telephone market," assesses IDC analyst Rogier Mol. "Every quarter we see the number of IP PBX and IP telephone sales growing. Apart from the replacement of TDM infrastructure we can see that this growth is driven by employees' need to communicate with each other more efficiently."
Networking superpower Cisco continues to lord it over the competition as its marketshare jumped from 33.7% to 34.2% sequentially in unit terms. Avaya and Alcatel took the two remaining podium positions.
