The adoption of Voice over IP (VoIP) is taking off in both the consumer and business markets, spurring increased sales of IP phones, reports In-Stat. In 2011, 93 million IP phones will ship to businesses and consumers, up from 24.3 million in 2007. To date, with customers able to use VoIP with conventional phones, the market for IP phones has lagged overall VoIP service use.
In the business world, many deployments of hybrid PBXs don’t include an upgrade to new phones. On the consumer side, service providers deploy analog telephone adapters, allowing consumers to use their existing telephones. Over the next few years though, IP phone sales will grow quickly as the benefits of IP end-points (presence, etc.) resonate more strongly with end-users.
A recent report by the high-tech market research firm found the following:
* Corded Ethernet phones are the mainstay of business IP phones today, while consumers have more interest in WLAN and cordless IP phones.
* Businesses will predominantly deploy desktop IP phones through the forecast period. IP DECT and Wi-Fi VoIP phones will be deployed primarily by specific vertical industries.
* The consumer market for handsets will be driven by combo WLAN/cellular phones offered by operators who begin offering FMC services.
