Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) has offered a peek at the latest version of its Windows CE embedded operating system for non-PC devices, which includes features that the company said will help equipment manufacturers and software developers speed the introduction of new products.
Windows CE 5.0, also known as "Macallan," offers improved hardware support, security enhancements and new multimedia capabilities for use in devices ranging from PDAs to set-top boxes. Among those supporting the platform are Intel (Nasdaq: INTC - news), Samsung, ViewSonic and Intermec.
Targeting OEMs
The new Windows CE is designed to meet demands for better efficiency and productivity among OEMs and developers, according to John Starkweather, senior product manager for Microsoft's embedded-devices group.
While recent editions of the OS had as many as 300 sample drivers, Starkweather told NewsFactor, version 5.0 is shipping with 50 drivers optimized for specific chipsets. "This will greatly reduce the time required for OEMs to bring their products to market," he said.
Intermec, for example, is developing industrial-grade handheld devices and Web terminals using the platform, while a company called InFocus has created a device that plugs into a projector and can pull multimedia content wirelessly from a variety of sources.
Taking Windows Out of the PC
Windows CE is the platform underlying Microsoft's Pocket PC and Smartphone operating systems used in next-generation voice/data handhelds. Last week, Microsoft introduced the latest iteration of its Windows Mobile software, based on CE technology.
It also is used in consumer electronics products, gateways, industrial controllers, IP set-top boxes, VoIP phones and thin clients.
Version 5.0 includes a mobile implementation of Microsoft's error-reporting technology, Starweather said, addressing a need among end users to troubleshoot while in the field. Support for Direct3D Mobile, an application created by Microsoft and Intel, allows developers to create richer graphics and multimedia content for small-scale devices.
Technology preview kits are being provided to attendees at this week's electronicaUSA conference. The test version of Windows CE 5.0 also will be available for downloadApril 1st. The final product will ship this summer.
