Published reports to the contrary, Jeffrey Wade, the marketing manager of HP's Open Source & Linux Organization, says the company has no intention whatsoever of skipping down the same garden path as Dell and selling consumers PCs with factory-installed Linux.
Not only is the market too small, there's no dominant distribution to make a SKU of, he said.
Large accounts are different. HP has large accounts in India, Australia, China and Brazil buying PCs with different HP-installed Linux distributions. In China it's Red Flag, he said, in Brazil Mandriva and Australia it's Red Hat, which he thought was also true of the account in India.
Wade said the situation was unlikely to change any time soon. Microsoft still owns the desktop.
