Gordon Haff, a principal IT advisor with Illuminata, expands on a blog conversation from the Cincom Smalltalk Tidbits blog about predatory open source practices. These are situations where companies release open source and free software products primarily for anti-competitive purposes, whether or not such corporate motives can be proven. He advocates common sense not only in spotting such actions, but in setting your expectations of the companies using these practices.
Haff includes as likely suspects IBM's Cloudspace and HP's Lustre. He references both the head-on competitive attack value, as well as the collateral damage to smaller competitors.
He concludes, "I don’t argue that (for the most part) such actions should be universally deplored or prohibited. It’s part of the way today’s software world works, and in many ways it provides direct advantages to IT customers. However, don’t mistake it for altruism -- and thereby get all shocked and disappointed when the same companies take some other action that is nakedly self-serving the next week."
