Cognos Inc. is launching new software aimed at making it easier and more efficient to use its business analysis tools, which Canada's biggest software maker hopes will drive demand and sales.
In the first upgrade to Cognos 8 BI, launched in September, 2005, the updated release will include new search and reporting features along with tighter links to several data sources.
Companies use the so-called business intelligence software to speed decision making by gleaning trends from data.
The Ottawa-based firm also announced on Monday plans to release a new search tool called Cognos Go! in May.
The service will make it simpler and faster for workers to find information, which Cognos hopes will translate into more widespread use of its technology within a company.
"That's of course a value to Cognos because it means more license revenue and more seats," said Cognos senior vice-president Don Campbell. "But it is a value to the organization because they have that information already, it's just a matter of making it available."
It is estimated that just 15 percent to 20 percent of workers who could benefit from business intelligence software use the technology due to its complexity, Campbell said.
The Cognos 8 BI upgrade, called MR1, includes tighter integration to Microsoft Office with new links to PowerPoint. It also has greater support for software from Siebel Systems Inc. and SAP AG (SAPG.DE)(NYSE:SAP - news).
The product news comes as Cognos prepares to release fourth-quarter results this week. Analysts will keep a keen eye on Cognos 8 demand when the numbers are reported on Thursday.
"We will be focusing on the firm's tone and guidance for the first quarter 2007 (and hopefully full year) now that Cognos 8 has been in the market for a full quarter," Scotia Capital analyst Paul Steep said in a recent report.
On average, analysts expect Cognos to report earnings per share of 38 cents and revenue of $238.5 million, the report added. The company had forecast earnings between 34 cents and 39 cents a share and revenue between $230 million and $240 million.
Competition is increasingly heated in the growing business intelligence market, with specialists such as Cognos and larger software vendors fighting for share.
"We expect competition to remain challenging in fiscal 2007," Steep said, citing ongoing efforts by Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT - news) and a recent entry by Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq:ORCL - news) in the sector.
