The small and medium-sized business market continues to be fertile ground for providers of converged communications solutions, according to new research from the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA).

Nearly one-third of the more than 350 small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) surveyed said they intend to buy new phone systems or make significant new investment in their current phone systems in the next 12 months.

When asked why they intend to invest in new communications solutions, 46 percent said they are looking for savings generated through streamlining business processes. Another 30 percent cited cost-cutting in their information technology (IT) and communications spending; while 23 percent said the desire to launch new services or capabilities is driving their spending plans.

“Each of these investment drivers is associated with converged communications systems,” said John Venator, president and chief executive officer, CompTIA. “It’s clear the benefits of converging voice and data onto a single network are more apparent to businesses, regardless of their size. Whether it’s reduced communications costs, better operational efficiency, or improved productivity, small and medium-sized businesses are eager to embrace the technology. Convergence also opens up opportunities for these organizations to introduce a range of advanced applications, such as unified messaging and video conferencing over the same network.”

Just 17 percent of the SMBs surveyed have already taken steps to converge their voice and data traffic onto a single network. Yet among those businesses with separate voice and data networks, two-thirds said they recognize the business value of converged communications solutions.

The survey revealed more good news for IT resellers and solution providers. They received generally high marks from their SMB customers. Nearly 90 percent of the SMBs surveyed believe their IT provider has the skills and capabilities to provide them with the converged communications solutions they need.

The purpose of the fourth annual CompTIA convergence study was to find out what communications applications and systems small to medium-sizes businesses are using today; and what they plan to use in the future. CompTIA commissioned IDC, a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services and events for the technology market, to survey individuals involved in purchasing voice and data communications systems for companies with 20 to 500 employees.
