The latest Emerging Markets Development Survey from Evans Data Corp reveals the number of developers targeting 64 bit chips is expected to dramatically increase in the next year. Evans Data found in their survey of over 400 developers from Eastern Europe, Brazil, China, and India that this year just 16% of developers in these regions are currently targeting 64-bit chips, but that within the next twelve months 56% are expecting to target the architecture. In North America, just over 23% are targeting 64-bit architecture in the next 12 months. Of the developers targeting 64-bit architecture, 40% are planning to target Intel Chips (Itanium, Itanium 2, EM64T, IA32e), while almost 23% are targeting AMD chips. AMD is showing strength in Eastern Europe with over 30% of that developer population targeting their 64-bit chips.
"The emphasis developers in the Emerging Markets are placing on 64-bit architectures correlates with the overall growth and IT spending seen with 64-bit chips," states John Andrews, President of Evans Data Corporation. "Because these regions have fewer migration issues, developers are able to write new and direct applications that take advantage of these architectures."
Other findings from the 2006 Emerging Markets Development Survey of more than 400 developers:
-- Seventeen percent of developers in Emerging Markets expect to be using Windows Vista next year.
-- Approximately 55% of all respondents think that they will write a Linux application in the next year.
