Strategy Analytics expects the installed base of mobile email users to double this year, with the hottest future growth areas driven by two catalysts: "Hosted Exchange Server" ASPs, and open mobile email standards such as OMA DS (Device Synch) and P-IMAP. The analysts report that RIM's share of the mobile email market dipped 5 points to 59 percent in the first half of 2006, however ASPs and open standards present a greater threat to Visto, Nokia Intellisync, and Seven.

Strategy Analytics said Hosted Exchange Server providers control nearly a third of the business email market. Meanwhile, the emergence of mobile email standards bodes well, given the demonstrated ability of technology standards to build sustainable, innovative and highly competitive markets.

"Maturing open mobile email standards and notably more aggressive mobility plays among email ASP's will prove to be major catalysts in mobilizing over 15 percent of business inboxes by 2009 and cutting today's $30-plus ARPU's in half," said Cliff Raskind, Director of the firm's Wireless Enterprise Strategies service.

Strategy Analytics says that ASP models and standards can serve as critical, long-term enablers by wringing cost, complexity and IPR uncertainty of out of the solution delivery equation. Both can put a good mobile email experience well within reach of the average business user.

Raskind said that while standards pioneers like Consilient, Synchronica and Funambol show significant upside potential in the long term, Mail2Web, MailStreet and 4Smartphone are among the email ASP's that will boost mobile email adoption in the short-to-medium term.

"RIM should succeed in protecting the high end of the market they now own if they continue to execute well. These trends present a larger threat to Visto, Intellisync & Seven's 19 percent 'carrier white label' share of the market," said Raskind.

Strategy Analytics' estimates the following as first-half 2006 market share among enterprise-grade mobile email suppliers:

   * RIM: 59%
   * Nokia Intellisync: 9%
   * Good: 8%
   * Microsoft: 7%
   * Seven: 7%
   * iAnywhere: 5%
   * Visto: 3%
   * Others: 2%
