ON Monday, hard drive manufacturer Seagate announced that it had begun shipping its first hybrid hard drives, known as the Momentus 5400, to the market.
According to Extreme Tech, the four new Momentus 5400 2.5" drives, will ship in 80, 120 and 160 gigabyte capacities and include both traditional magnetic disk platters and solid-state-disk drives, which incorporate flash memory for faster speeds. In a hybrid drive, the flash memory can be used as a cache system, allowing data to be quickly moved over to the traditional magnetic disk platter and allow for lower power usage between the drives and the battery life of a laptop computer.
Seagate has mentioned that this drive is essentially a "sneak preview" and according to Seagate's representatives, the company will extend the drives into the desktop, server and consumer spaces.
Like most hard drives, the unit will feature a buffer. In this case, the flash memory serves the same purpose and a 256 megabyte onboard unit will accompany an eight megabyte RAM cache in helping to move cached write requests to the disk. The drive's noise output is rated as "silent" while the unit reportedly only uses 0.3 watts of electricity and features an operating shock tolerance of 900 Gs. The Momentus 5400 moves data at 44 megabytes per second according to Seagate.
No fixed price has been announced for the Momentus 5400 drives, although Seagate's standard five year warranty continues to apply to the units.
